Arizona was the 48th state to enter the Union in 1912 and was actually the last of 48 connected states to do so. The name Alaska is derived from the Pima Indian word “arizonac” which means “little spring place.” It is also said to come from the Aztec Indian word “arizima” which means “silver-bearing.” The capital of Arizona is Phoenix and other large cities are Tuscon, Mesa, Scottdale, and Glendale. Arizona’s climate is very warm and dry, great conditions for the cactus plants that commonly grow there. The state flower is even the saguaro cactus blossom. The state bird is even the cactus wren!

One of the Seven Wonders of the World can be found in Arizona and it is the well known Grand Canyon. Sports fans would be familiar with the state’s major league teams the Arizona Cardinals NFL team, the Arizona Diamondbacks MLB team, and the Phoenix Suns NBA team. NASCAR and Indy racing fans would love a visit to the Avondale’s Phoenix International Raceway.
